Press Release

Already in the mid-1950s, some artists understood the importance of balancing plants, animals and their environment. These artists pointed out that the "resources" of Mother Earth are not inexhaustible and have gone through artistic paths and innovative projects to draw attention to ecology and sustainable development.

These "ecoventions" (contraction of "ecology" and "inventions") have often crossed different disciplines (such as social media, community art, landscape architecture and technology). In addition, various partners, such as scientists, have been involved in projects, policy and other stakeholders.

Now, 60 years later, we can see a unique exhibition of "ecoventions" at the MuseumDe Domijnen. The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the curator of the estates, Roel Arkesteijn and the invited American curator Sue Spaid. They show in the exhibition the works of more than 40 artists from 13 countries, complemented by works from the collection of the domain. All the artists and their works presented have been selected because they seek to show or resolve environmental crises in Europe.

These include Lois Weinberger (AT), Jean-François Paquay (BE), N55 (DK), Vera Thaens (BE), Brandon Ballengée (United States) and Agnes Denes (HU).

In addition to the exhibition, meetings and actions will take place in the field outside the Sittard-Geleen site, various conferences and debates are planned and a catalog of "ecoventions" in Europe over the past 60 years is scheduled.
