Press Release

Kunsthalle Mannheim presents the exhibition 1.5 Degrees: Interdependencies of Life, the Cosmos, and Technology from April 7 to October 8, 2023, in collaboration with the National Garden Show 2023 in Mannheim.

The exhibition will spotlight the complex interaction of human beings, nature, and technology. With artworks produced especially for the exhibition alongside loaned works from around the world and pieces from the museum’s own collection, this exhibition will explore how the climate crisis influences all areas of life. The range in view will stretch from the smallest of earth dwellers to the largest possible configurations: the cosmos of the stars.

A multi-perspectival approach
1.5 Degrees is arranged in several fragments that are located across all layers of the new annex of the Kunsthalle, but also find their way to the exhibition space of the original art nouveau building. An exhibition of prints and drawings on the subject of insects will open there on May 11, 2023.

Individual chapters will deal with artistic forms of activism, the significance of animal-human relationships, and the links between art, science, and technology. Artists such as Ernesto Neto, melanie bonajo, Marianna Simnett, Laure Prouvost, Tita Salina, and Trevor Paglen will on the one hand point out the threatened ecological dangers and on the other hand emphasize the hope-giving potential of creativity and innovation.

1.5 Degrees: Also at the German National Garden Show 2023, BUGA 23 in Mannheim
As a partner of BUGA 23, Kunsthalle Mannheim will be transgressing its limits as a museum in the exhibition
1.5 Degrees: The artists Olaf Holzapfel and Fabian Knecht will be realizing accessible and site-specific installations on the grounds of the National Garden Show in the framework of the exhibition. A co-production of Kunsthalle Mannheim and BUGA 23, especially conceived and implemented for this major event, the audience will be invited to participate and is encouraged to critically examine how humanity relates to nature around us.
